This year, all students in 1st through 7th grades will take art once per week, as well as those 8th through 12th graders who choose art as an elective.

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p>Welcome back to school!</p>
<p>This year, all students in 1st through 7th grades will take art once per week, as well as those 8th through 12th graders who choose art as an elective.</p>
<p>Elementary students need to bring a large posterboard each on Friday, July 25.  High school students need to bring two large posterboards.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Any donated art supplies would be greatly appreciated.</p>
<p>We need things like drawing pencils, oil and chalk pastels, spray fixatives, glue and glue sticks, rulers, drawing paper, paints, watercolor paper, construction paper, tissue paper, &#8220;found objects&#8221; (feathers, buttons, beads, ticket stubs, etc.), or anything else you would care to donate.</p>
<p>I will be posting the syllabi as well as weekly assignments.  Most work will be done in class.  High school students will have sketch books due every week.  Occasionally, elementary students will have brief questionnaires or activities to do at home.</p>
<p> </p>

<p><strong><u>Art Room Rules:</p>
<p></u></strong>1. Respect classmates and their artwork.</p>

<p>3. Respect the supplies &#8211; no wasting or destruction.</p>
<p>Rules will be added if/as needed.</p>
<p><strong><u>Grading Policy:</p>
<p></u></strong>The break-down of the total semester grade is as follows:</p>
<p>10% Research assignment</p>
<p>10% Final Portfolio review</p>
<p>5% Sketchbook</p>
<p>75% Projects</p>
<p>Each project will be graded based on the following:</p>
<p>30% Participation/Attitude</p>
<p>20% Mastery of art concepts (demonstrated in project)</p>
<p>10% Testing</p>
<p>30% Completion of project criteria</p>
<p>10% Aesthetics of the project</p>
<p><strong><u>Participation/Attitude:</p>
<p></u></strong>Participation and a positive attitude during class is necessary for a successful learning experience. A poor attitude has negative effects on yourself and on others.</p>
<p>Part of the participation grade will include bringing in the necessary supplies. I will try to keep the cost of these supplies at a minimum. If the cost becomes an issue, please contact me so arrangements can be made.</p>
<p><strong><u>Mastery of art concepts:</p>
<p></u></strong>Mastery of art concepts can be demonstrated in your project without being a master artist. For example, things like contrast and good composition do not require extraordinary talent. Just as you do not go into an Algebra class already knowing how to do Algebra, you will learn concepts of art as we go through the semester.</p>
<p><strong><u>Testing:</p>
<p></u></strong>Students will be given a short test during each unit. These tests will include vocabulary or short answers based on the concepts covered during that unit.</p>
<p><strong><u>Completion of project criteria:</p>
<p></u></strong>With each assignment, the student will be given (in writing) the grading criteria for that assignment. Late assignments will be docked 5% for each day until it is turned in (excused absences excepted).</p>
<p><strong><u>Aesthetics of the project:</p>
<p></u></strong>We will build on concepts over the course of the semester that will help the student understand aesthetics. The aesthetics grade is the only portion of the grade that takes talent into account. While I am not expecting students to be Picassos or Rembrandts, it is expected that, with effort and practice, skills in art will improve over the course of the semester. This grade will reflect the student’s demonstration of the concepts learned up to that point. For example, the “aesthetics” grade for project 2 will also include concepts learned in project 1. The aesthetics grade also includes <strong>craftsmanship</strong>.</p>
<p>Students will be given a progress report after completion of each project. If there are questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by phone or e-mail.</p>
<p><strong><u>Portfolio:</p>
<p></u></strong>Each student is required to make and keep a portfolio. All projects (or photos of 3D projects) are to be kept in this portfolio for review at the end of the semester. This will account for 10% of the semester grade.</p>
<p><strong><u>Research Assignment:</p>
<p></u></strong>A short research assignment (3-5 pages) will be assigned later in the semester. It can cover the student’s choice of an art movement, artist, or individual work of art. Details will be handed out at the time of assignment.</p>
<p><strong><u>Sketch Book:</p>
<p></u></strong>Students are required to complete <strong>two 10-minute </strong>sketches and <strong>one 20-minute </strong>sketch in their sketch books each week. Sketchbooks will be checked each Friday.</p>
<p><strong><u>Miscellaneous:</p>
<p></u></strong>Students are allowed to bring <em>appropriate</em> music for the class to listen to during studio time.</p>
