Welcome back to school!

This year, all students in 1st through 7th grades will take art once per week, as well as those 8th through 12th graders who choose art as an elective.

Elementary students need to bring a large posterboard each on Friday, July 25. High school students need to bring two large posterboards.

Any donated art supplies would be greatly appreciated.

We need things like drawing pencils, oil and chalk pastels, spray fixatives, glue and glue sticks, rulers, drawing paper, paints, watercolor paper, construction paper, tissue paper, “found objects” (feathers, buttons, beads, ticket stubs, etc.), or anything else you would care to donate.

I will be posting the syllabi as well as weekly assignments. Most work will be done in class. High school students will have sketch books due every week. Occasionally, elementary students will have brief questionnaires or activities to do at home.

If you have questions, please call the school or refer to my contact information on the handouts you received on orientation night.

Financial donations to River of Life Art Class (can be turned in to Ms. Scott or Mrs. Garcia at the office).

Please keep in mind that there are 12 kids total in the art classes.

Items to purchase:

Good drawing pencils – 2B, 4B, 6B – several of each

Large drawing paper (24 x 36)

Large newsprint paper (24 x 36)

Large watercolor paper (24 x 36) for painting

Acrylic paints in large tubes or pint containers

Glue and glue sticks

Specialty glues (for glass, ceramics, metal, etc.)

Paint brushes

Good art erasers – art gum erasers, white erasers, kneaded erasers, etc.

Markers, colored pencils

Colored paper – construction paper, posterboard, card stock, etc.

Items that may be around your house:

Scrap metal, wire, hardware

Buttons, small decorative rocks or baubles, beads

Bric-a-brac, yarn, etc.

Any other “found objects” or art supplies (WE WILL USE THEM!)

Construction supplies – pliers, hammer, nails, etc.

I’d like for the students to be able to work with a variety of materials if they want – metal sculptures, wood, ceramics, whatever… If you have something you think we could use, we’d be happy to have it!

Principles of Design

Balance -

Refers to the way in which the elements of a piece are arranged

Symmetrical - elements are given equal “weight” from an imaginary line in the center of the piece

Asymmetrical - elements are placed unevenly in a piece, but work together to produce overall harmony

Movement -

The combination of elements of art to produce the look of action

Implied motion

Rhythm -

A visual beat

Can be regular (equal spacing, weight, etc.) or irregular (unequal spacing, weight, etc.)

Think of rhythm in music

Contrast -

Created by using opposites near or beside one another (light & dark, smooth & rough)

Arrangement of opposite elements in a piece so as to create visual interest, excitement, or drama

Emphasis -

Occurs any time an element of a piece is given dominance by the artist

Draws the viewer’s eye to the dominant object

Often, the use of contrast aids in emphasis

Lack of emphasis can make the piece seem monotonous and boring to the eye

Pattern -

Repetition of an element in a work

Colors, shapes, lines

Can be regular or irregular

Unity -

A feeling of completeness created by the use of elements in a piece

a.k.a. Harmony

Occurs when all of the elements in a piece combine to make a balanced, harmonious, complete whole

Can be achieved through clustering, alignment, color

Elements of Design

Line -

A continuous mark made on a surface

Can define a space, create an outline or pattern, imply movement or texture, and allude to mass or volume

Shape -

Enclosed space defined and determined by other elements (line, color, value, texture)

TWO-dimensional

Organic – natural shapes, less defined

Geometric – clear edges, straight lines

Form -

Overall structure, enables viewer to perceive the work

THREE-dimensional

Color -

Element produced when light is reflected off an object to the eye

Hue - the name of the color (yellow, black, blue-green, etc.)

Intensity - strength & vividness of the color (bright or dull)

Value - lightness or darkness of the color

Texture -

3-D (REAL) – describes the way a work actually feels

2-D (IMPLIED) – describes the feel of a work created with other elements

Space -

Positive space – space filled by the artwork

Negative space – empty space around or within the artwork

Implied Space -

Cluster - placing objects together in varying sizes in order to imply distance between the objects

Overlap - placing objects behind/in front of each other to imply distance between the objects

Linear Perspective – system for drawing that uses lines and vanishing points to determine how an object’s apparent size changes with space to give the illusion of depth and distance

Atmospheric Perspective - deals with how the appearance of an object is affected by looking at it through the air, using contrast, color, focus, and level of detail to give the illusion of depth and distance

Renaissance Project

Project 3: The Renaissance: Linear & Atmospheric Perspective

Materials:

Large Drawing Paper

Large Watercolor Paper

Pencils, pens, sharpies, etc.

Acrylic paints, Paintbrushes

Student Sketchbook

Art Concepts:

Linear Perspective, Atmospheric Perspective, Line, Space

Objective:
Students will understand basic elements of the Renaissance and its influence on modern thought and art. Students will also understand the principles of linear and atmospheric perspective, and how to create these visually. Students will demonstrate their knowledge through the creation of a drawing (for linear perspective) and a painting (for atmospheric perspective).

Step 1: Teacher presentation Monday, August 27.

Step 2: QUIZ!! Tuesday, August 28.

Step 3: Linear Perspective
We will practice one-point and two-point perspective in class on Tuesday, August 28. A large drawing using two-point perspective is due on Thursday, August 30, at the end of class. This drawing can be in pencil, ink, or marker.

Step 4: Atmospheric Perspective
We will learn techniques of acrylic painting beginning on Friday, August 31. These will be practiced in class on Friday and Monday, September 3. A painting using atmospheric perspective on large watercolor paper will be due at the end of class on Wednesday, September 5.

Grading Criteria:
Completion by due date
Amount of art coverage on the paper
Demonstration of understanding of linear and atmospheric perspective

Art Class Syllabus River of Life Christian School

I will be available in the library after class until the end of school each day. Please feel free to call or e-mail if there are questions or concerns.

Art Room Rules:

1. Respect classmates and their artwork.

2. Talking is allowed during studio time, unless it becomes distracting.

3. Respect the supplies – no wasting or destruction.

Rules will be added if/as needed.

Grading Policy:

The break-down of the total semester grade is as follows:

10% Research assignment

10% Final Portfolio review

5% Sketchbook

75% Projects

Each project will be graded based on the following:

30% Participation/Attitude

20% Mastery of art concepts (demonstrated in project)

10% Testing

30% Completion of project criteria

10% Aesthetics of the project

Participation/Attitude:

Participation and a positive attitude during class is necessary for a successful learning experience. A poor attitude has negative effects on yourself and on others.

Part of the participation grade will include bringing in the necessary supplies. I will try to keep the cost of these supplies at a minimum. If the cost becomes an issue, please contact me so arrangements can be made.

Mastery of art concepts:

Mastery of art concepts can be demonstrated in your project without being a master artist. For example, things like contrast and good composition do not require extraordinary talent. Just as you do not go into an Algebra class already knowing how to do Algebra, you will learn concepts of art as we go through the semester.

Testing:

Students will be given a short test during each unit. These tests will include vocabulary or short answers based on the concepts covered during that unit.

Completion of project criteria:

With each assignment, the student will be given (in writing) the grading criteria for that assignment. Late assignments will be docked 5% for each day until it is turned in (excused absences excepted).

Aesthetics of the project:

We will build on concepts over the course of the semester that will help the student understand aesthetics. The aesthetics grade is the only portion of the grade that takes talent into account. While I am not expecting students to be Picassos or Rembrandts, it is expected that, with effort and practice, skills in art will improve over the course of the semester. This grade will reflect the student’s demonstration of the concepts learned up to that point. For example, the “aesthetics” grade for project 2 will also include concepts learned in project 1. The aesthetics grade also includes craftsmanship.

Students will be given a progress report after completion of each project. If there are questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by phone or e-mail.

Portfolio:

Each student is required to make and keep a portfolio. All projects (or photos of 3D projects) are to be kept in this portfolio for review at the end of the semester. This will account for 10% of the semester grade.

Research Assignment:

A short research assignment (3-5 pages) will be assigned later in the semester. It can cover the student’s choice of an art movement, artist, or individual work of art. Details will be handed out at the time of assignment.

Sketch Book:

Students are required to complete two 10-minute sketches and one 20-minute sketch in their sketch books each week. Sketchbooks will be checked each Friday.

Miscellaneous:

Students are allowed to bring appropriate music for the class to listen to during studio time.

Australian Aboriginal Art

Project 2: Australian Aboriginal Art

Materials:

Black paper
Paint, markers, oil pastels, etc.Student Sketchbook Art Concepts:
Line
Space – negative & positive
Balance

Objective:

Students will understand basic Australian Aboriginal culture and create an original piece of artwork based on Aboriginal design concepts, including the nine types of lines.

Step 1: Teacher presentation

Friday, August 17, and Monday, August 20.

Step 2: QUIZ!!

Monday, August 20.

Step 3: Discussion and sketching

Students should sketch at least three designs and decide which one to use on the final project (or combine them all).

Step 4:

Creating the project
This will take one or two class periods.

Due Date:

Project must be complete at the beginning of class Wednesday, August 22.

Grading Criteria:

Completion by due date
Amount of art coverage on the paper

Week of Monday, January 14…

We will be working on our hats until Wednesday. If everyone is working diligently and still needs extra time, we will negotiate.

MATERIALS FOR HATS SHOULD BE BROUGHT IN. These are to be original hat designs, not decorated baseball caps (unless the student has already made arrangements with me).

Things to keep in mind are: form and function, size and shape, color, materials, adornment – all of these things tell us what hats are used for and who wears them! This hat should say something about you!!!
